किसी श्रोता का प्रश्न - कोई अमुक काम करते समय हम किसी देवता की मनौती मान लेते हैं कि काम पूरा हो तो यह चढ़ाएँगे, वह चढ़ाएँगे। क्या ऐसा करने से देवता लोग हमारी सहायता करते हैं? इस तरह हमें करना चाहिए या नहीं करना चाहिए? :-

शंकराचार्य जी ने श्रोता से पूछा - आपने कभी किया है क्या?

श्रोता - जी! करते हैं।

शंकराचार्य जी - तो कुछ लाभ हुआ है क्या?

श्रोता - नहीं लाभ हुआ महाराज कुछ भी

शंकराचार्य जी - - एक देवी-देवता या अलग-अलग? 

श्रोता - जो आसपास दिखते हैं।

शंकराचार्य जी - हाँ, वही बात है। अपनी औकात की सीमा में मनौती मानते हैं या औकात की सीमा का अतिक्रमण करके?  सच्चे हृदय से… सनातन धर्म में जो देवी-देवता माने गये हैं, उनमें विशेषकर जो इष्टदेव हों, कुलदेव हों, कुलदेवी हों, जिसमें किसी अन्य का अहित न हो और अपना हित हो, प्रार्थना करने पर उसकी पूर्ति अवश्य होती है। समझ गये? भगवान् सूर्य और ब्रह्मा में एकत्व है। भगवान् विष्णु, भगवान् शिव, भगवती शक्ति, और गणपति (गणेश), ये पाँच सनातन देवता हैं। इनके जो शास्त्रसम्मत अवतार हैं, जैसे शिवजी के अवतार हनुमान जी, विष्णु जी के अवतार नृसिंह जी, राम जी, कृष्ण जी। पाँच देव या पञ्चदेव के शास्त्रसम्मत अवतार, उनमें किसी एक को कुलदेव, कुलदेवी या इष्टदेव के रूप में मानकर उन्हीं के प्रति अपना जीवन समर्पित समझकर फिर उनका स्मरण करके करने योग्य काम प्रारम्भ किया जाए और विघ्न की निवृत्ति के लिए उनसे प्रार्थना की जाए, कि आपकी कृपा से मेरा मनोरथ सिद्ध हो तो अवश्य भगवान् कृपा करते हैं, भगवती कृपा करती हैं। लेकिन उसमें अनन्यता चाहिए आस्था चाहिए। और उचित विधा भी चाहिए। किसी के अहित की भावना से अगर मनौती मानेंगे तो सफलता न ही मिले यही अच्छा है। आत्म कल्याण हो और दूसरे का अहित न हो तो मनौती मानने पर भगवान्…. सीता जी ने मनौती मांगी या नहीं? जय जय गिरिवर राज किसोरी गौरी जी की कृपा से उनको राम जी मिले या नहीं? ऐसा तो होता ही है। अनन्यता चाहिए और आस्था चाहिए। अनन्यता और आस्था। तीसरी बात, उर्दू में कहे तो औकात। औकात माने अपनी सीमा में मनौती माने। हम कहें कि अजर-अमर शरीर से हो जाऊँ या ब्रह्मा जी का पद इसी शरीर से पा जाऊँ... यह नहीं। अपनी औकात देखकर आस्थापूर्वक मनौती-मानने पर देवी-देवता का पूर्ण अनुग्रह प्राप्त होता है। अनन्यता चाहिए, आस्था चाहिए और औकात का ज्ञान चाहिए। तब मनौती पूर्ण होती है। उसमें तो कोई संदेह ही नहीं है।

और सबसे बढ़िया यह है कि जो इष्टदेव हों उनके प्रति देह, इन्द्रिय, प्राण, अन्तःकरण के सहित अपने आप को मन से समर्पित कर दे और जो अपनी जिम्मेवारी है उसका निर्वाह करे, बिना माँगे ही वो फिर… जैसे छोटा बच्चा है, उसका पालन-पोषण माता-पिता आदि करते हैं, तो भगवान् के समाश्रित हो जाने पर स्वयं भगवान् (इष्टदेव) योग-क्षेम करते हैं। लेकिन अगर मनौती माने बिना न रहे तो मनौती मानने में कोई आपत्ति नहीं है। शर्त यह है कि अनन्यता हो, आस्था हो, अपनी सीमा (औकात) का ध्यान हो।

Question: Does Ishwara (Bhagwan) help us when we appease him?

Shankaracharya ji respondsDo you appease Bhagwan within the limits of your capacity or do you go beyond your limits? When we pray sincerely to Devis or Devatas of Sanatana Dharma, especially our favourite Deva or our clan’s Devata or Devi (Kula-Devata or Kula-Devi), and our prayers are for our welfare and not to harm others, then prayers are certainly answered. Did you understand? There is unity in Brahma and Bhagwan Surya. Along with them, Bhagwan Vishnu, Bhagwan Shiva, Bhagawati Shakti and Ganapati ji are 5 Sanatana Devatas. According to the Shastras, these five have incarnations. Shiva ji incarnated as Hanuman ji, Vishnu ji’s incarnations are Narasingha ji, Rama ji and Krishna ji. We should consider one of these five, or one of their incarnations laid down by the Shastras, as a Kula-Devata or Kula-Devi (Devata or Devi of our clan) and we should submit our lives unto them. We should begin the work that we are capable of, by keeping them in our minds, pray that we get rid of the obstacles from our paths, and that our desires be fulfilled by their grace, then Bhagwan or Bhagawati certainly bless us with their grace. We need to make use of the appropriate mode of appeasement and there must be exclusivity and faith. If we appease Bhagwan while wishing evil for somebody, then it's better that we don’t succeed. When we appease, our prayer must be for our own welfare and not to harm anybody. Didn't Sita ji appease? Jai Jai Girivar Rajkishori Didn't she get Rama ji by Gauri ji’s grace? So, this happens. Two things are very important – exclusivity and faith. The third is capacity or what we say in Urdu, ‘Aukāt’. We must appease Bhagwan within the limits of our status and capacity. Should we pray and ask that we become immortal or we get the position of Brahma ji! (satirical) Devi and Devata bless us with complete grace when we appease them with deep faith and within the boundaries of our status and dignity. We need three things – exclusivity, faith and knowledge of our capability. Then, our wishes are fulfilled. There is no doubt in it.

The best thing is that we must submit our body, senses, prāna (life-force) and Ātmā to our favourite Deva and we must take care of and complete our responsibilities. Then, our prayers are answered without any asking. Just the way a father and mother look after a small child, Bhagwan takes care of us when we submit ourselves totally. If one still wants to appease, there's no problem in it provided one is mindful of exclusivity, faith and limits of one’s capacity.
